Surfing the Aldi wave

I was one of the first in to Aldi Canberra when the doors went up. I went directly to the specials table, looking for the bicycle kit that went on sale that day.

Right at the end were three e-bikes. I didn’t want one of them — I was looking for bike tools — but obviously others had their eyes on them.

Bang, bang, bang. Five seconds and they were all gone. I guess $599 is a good price for an e-bike.

Unfortunately, the advertised set of bike tools was not available — the pandemic has had an effect on the supply chain, and truckdrivers are viewed with even more suspicion than normal at the border checkpoints — but I was able to carry off a workshop stand.

Nobody but me was snapping these up but I was very glad to have a stand to hold a bicycle up for maintenance.

As the photo shows, I have a bike that needs a bit of work. Well, a lot of work.

More on that later. The workshop stand is a chunky beast, solid and sturdy, able to fold up and down as required, height adjustable, a quick-release clamp to hold a bike frame securely, and an attached tray to hold tools and the inevitable bolts and screws that are part of bike maintenance.

$39.99 and worth every cent. I’ve shown it with legs spread and top pole lowered, but it can…
