I’m taking a cruise later this year. It was a lucky coincidence: a couple of mates — absolutely nuts on cruises and hit particularly hard over the past two years — announced that they were doing a Japan cruise.

Now, as it happens, we’re booked for a Japan trip later this year, twice postponed over Covid, and the things matched up.

I’ve long wanted to cruise with this couple. They are great company, the sort of travellers who fill up their passports at twice the normal rate, and they are on first-name terms with all the crew on all the ships. Keep the cider flowing and their travel stories get more and more entertaining.

Spending a couple of weeks exploring Japan in comfort in good company, well it’s a no-brainer, really. I looked up the cruise and booked a cabin.

I’ve been doing a bit of research. Months out, I’ve fired up the Japanese module in Duolingo, found a phrasebook, read some books, and watched some videos about Japan.
