A day of renewal today.

I got my hair cut. I closed my eyes while the hairdresser worked, practicing a bit of mindfulness, noting the various sensations without comment. The buzz of the clippers, the feel of the blade moving through my hair, the smells of sprays and lotions. The action stopped for a moment and I cast my hearing wider, felt the gentle play of air on my skin…

Suddenly a hurricane of hairdryer whooshed stray hairs off my face.

“Wasn’t that exciting!” she said, noting my reaction. “Shall I trim your eyebrow now?”

Then I collected my new glasses. Sat me down and tried them on. Looking into the mirror I contemplated that I didn’t often return to the Eighties and teardrop aviator shades, but there it was.

“Right,” she said, handing me a card with samples of text in various sizes, “let’s check your reading.”

I scanned the card, making sure each line was clear and readable. Anodyne prose about trees and hills and water. How boring. I cleared my throat and began reading aloud.

Softly, yet firmly, he pressed his body against her tender flesh. “Oooh,” she sighed, “Feed it to me, big boy.”

“Hmmm,” the optometrist said, “I don’t think your eyesight is the problem.”
