A week to go in the referendum campaign and with defeat all but assured — barring some colossal polling failure affecting the many pollsters covering this issue or some stunning new revelation — the YES campaign has pretty much given up trying to persuade the electorate and is now applying soothing sentiments to its own supporters.

The poll aggregates are all showing a steady decline in support. The more coverage this issue gets, the more people talk about it, the less the voters like it.

This article — one of a series — makes the point that the downward trend is an unwavering straight line down.

Ad campaigns, songs, mass rallies, celebrity endorsements, nothing has worked for YES.

Given that pre-poll voting has been underway for a week, all those votes plus whatever postal votes have been cast will be at the levels indicated by the polling, and if there is some sort of miraculous turnaround…
